This week long artistic event - the opening event of the 2012 Jerusalem season - combines walking, creative expression, and human interaction as artist Guy Briller, who conceived of the project, leads 25 artists, social activists and intellectuals on a pilgrimage from the Neve Shalom communal settlement to Jerusalem.
Going Up: Jerusalem is a physical journey by artists, philosophers and activists from around the world. Inspired by the social protests in Israel and the global resistance movement, this project speculates about what our current social-cultural ideology should be and how it can be realized. Considering the tension between utopia and reality, the "Big Brother" phenomenon and social change, this journey’s goal is to create a temporary community of 20-30 members who create, walk, talk and share an experience on the way up to Jerusalem.
The project’s fundamental assumption is that walking as an act of self-observation and reflection on one’s surroundings creates space in which people from different communities can make meaningful connections and imagine a future beyond existing reality.
Going Up: Jerusalem is an attempt to break away from the consumerist and industrious day-to-day grind for one week, and make time and room for an alternative, which would exist at the edge of the highway that leads to Jerusalem.
The pilgrimage will end in a communal tent which will be erected for 24 hours in Jerusalem—in which the artists will exhibit the work they produced during the journey.
