In Oz Malul’s work, Bumper, a pair of black car wheel rims groan on the carpet, missing their tire, breathing heavily, as it were. An internal apparatus makes them contract, sigh, and growl before they return to their original state. In his sculptures, banal and unpretentious everyday materials and objects become anomalous. They convey ruggedness and vulnerability at the same time, appearing malfunctioning, thereby undermining the exiting expectations of the machine’s functioning. The objects’ limitations lend them human qualities which are reinforced by the sound they make: cracked, throaty, and grunting.
In Crickets, two welding rods move along a chain-like mechanism, converging and diverging at random. Their brief encounters generate sparks.
