The zeppelin, or rather two zeppelins, that Berest saw as she returned from a demonstration by the Ansar detention camp in the western Negev, were hovering above what appeared to be waves: the all-seeing eyes, the eyes in the sky, were taking a rest. It is a unique moment in which we see these eyes without their seeing us. Even in this moment of retinal repose, these giant electronic eyes appear more like bombs; even then they are threatening. Now as then, such eyes—zeppelins, satellites, surveillance cameras, sensors—continue to spy on us, recording, monitoring and broadcasting the movements of suspects and innocents alike, from more and more locations. We have grown so accustomed to being spied on and constantly followed that only a strange, extraordinary presence of something like a zeppelin reminds us of the omnipresent watchful eye.
