Quiet Beach - Haifa Base, 2011

video, 4:57 min

A single wall topped with coiled barbed wire separates one of Haifa’s most popular beaches from the Israeli navy’s vast military base and shipyard. Splashing here, repairing there; sunbathing here, and behind the wall—loading, unloading, ordering and arranging. Thus, in the closest possible proximity, the civilian and the military intersect in the waters of the bay. According to foreign sources (e.g., http://www.armagedon.org.il/submarines.htm), among the watercraft docking at the camp are three "Dolphin" submarines capable of carrying and launching nuclear warhead missiles. According to foreign as well as Israeli sources, three more submarines with similar nuclear capabilities are now in construction in Germany and are scheduled to arrive soon in Haifa

It’s quiet out there, on the beach. Children build castles in the sand and frolic in the waves, while only several hundred feet away, in the silence of the nonexistent discourse about Israel’s military capabilities (conventional and other), are moored three monsters of steel and electronics against whose powers no buoy or sunscreen can provide protection.
