Cathy van Eck is a composer and sound artist. Her work includes compositions for instruments and live-electronics as well as performances with (self-made) sound objects.
Hearing Sirens is a work based on two of the applications of the word siren. The siren is a mythological woman (bird body and woman’s head as noise makers) warning against disaster and known in antiquity for their beautiful singing. Unable to resist them, men who heard them perished. The siren as a noisemaker is used to warn people against catastrophe and thus is a survival tool. Using a rotating disk with holes, it creates a particular sound - both an acoustic, visual, and conceptual starting-point for this piece. Since in Israel sirens are heard often, this performance is dedicated to sounds not normally heard from sirens - the wings of butterflies and the sounds of small music boxes.
