Maurício Ianês was born in Santos, Brazil, in 1973, started his studies in Philosophy in the same city, but soon moved to São Paulo and graduated in Fine Arts at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP). Lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil. Language, its limits and possibilities, its failure, the semiotics of silence, the search for new possibilities of communication and its social implications are the main issues in his artistic research, drawing influences from and playing with philosophy, literature, poetry and music. His output ranges from installations to performance, videos, drawing, objects, photography, etc.

Related to his research on the deconstruction of language and its implications, both connected to Jewish mysticism and the dissolution of communication, Ianês developed mainly two projects during his residency at the center. Two free-form documentaries, both of them giving birth to two different works. On one of them, the focus was on the very active experimental/ noise music scene in Tel Aviv; the other, on deconstruction and melodic use of the name of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov by his Na-Nach followers.

As a result of the documentaries, Ianês is currently developing two works - one performance, one sound piece - with Israeli sound artist Daniel Meir and musician Rani Zager. Also, a 3-channel video installation that shows the artist’s mouth, spelling randomly the syllables used by the Na-Nach chassidim, "na-nach-nachma-nachman-meuman", thus creating a sort of senseless sound landscape that brings to mind modernist minimalistic experiments on sound as well as the play of words and letters typical to Jewish mysticism.
