Gabi Scardi, curator of Careof e Viafarini, DOCVA, invites the Mobile Archive to Milano, Italy. The exhibition will be taking place between March 24 – April 11, 2009 and is designed as an open-access video library where guests can curate their own programs of video art. Careof e Viafarini, DOCVA is the ninth stop in the Mobile Archive’s three year travels.
In honour of the event, Galit Eilat will be giving a presentation ’On Mobility and the Mobile Archive’ on the evening of the opening. Later in its programming (to be updated) Israeli artist, Roee Rosen, will give a talk about his work.
The Mobile Archive is a project which was initiated in March, 2007 by the Israeli Center for Digital Art and the Kunstverein, Hamburg. It is a proxy of the Israeli Center for Digital Art’s resident Video Archive which is comprised of over 1500 video and multimedia works. The Mobile Archive considers how to be relevant in other contexts. This question led original project curators, Eyal Danon, Galit Eilat, and Eva Birkenstock to the idea to open up the archive to regional contributions. Therefore, each host of the Mobile Archive adds up to 25 selected video works to the original collection of works.
The Mobile Archive will be in Milano to complement an initiative already underway at Careof e Viafarini, DOCVA, where one can find the new Documentation Center for Visual Arts comprising a specialized Library with 15 000 titles including monographic catalogs, catalogs, essays, artists books and magazines; a Video Archive with more than 4500 artists’ works and video documentations; the Portfolio Archive with documentation material of more than 2600 Italian artists; the database ArtBox with information about opportunities such as competitions, fellowships and organizations for artists and art professionals. Connected to the Archives is also a portfolio viewing service, carried out by the curators Chiara Agnello (Careof) and Milovan Farronato (Viafarini).
The materials and pieces of information are all made available also through online databases: http://www.bibliobit.it (catalog of the library and video collections), http://www.portfolioonline.it (complete list of the artists in the Archive, with information and selections of their works), http://www.italianarea.it (around 100 monographic documentation files about the main artists of the Italian scene, including bio/bibliographies and images of their works) and http://www.bancadatiartbox.it (synthetic information about opportunities with links to related websites).
