On 1 September 2011, seven weeks after the social-justice protest broke out in Israel, Ohad Fishof walked along Tel Aviv’s Rothschild Boulevard from ten o’clock in the morning till eight o’clock in the evening at a speed of one meter per minute. Many people joined him on various sections of the walk, and some accompanied him through its entirety. It was the second in an ongoing series of Slow Walk performances, and a symbolic tribute to the social struggle. “Slow walking is taking a stand through your body”, says Fishof. “It is a physical conceptualization of values I consider important in the context of a long-term social struggle: perseverance, patience, and personal commitment”. The first performance in the series took place on 21 June 2005, when Fishof walked across London Bridge for nine hours, forty-three minutes, and twenty-five seconds to mark five years to the musical composition Longplayer conceived and composed by Jem Finer, which is set to play until the end of the millennium. Fishof’s ongoing project presents an alternative to the fast pace of life in urban environments by focusing on the present, and transforming the ‘moment’ into a segment for observation, thinking, and awareness.
