The performances of Northern Ireland artist David Sherry politely confront social conventions and codes. In his work Just Popped Out, Back in Two Hours he sits motionlessly, staring into space for about an hour and a half with a yellow post-it note bearing the name of the work stuck carelessly to his forehead. The work absurdly challenges the ostensibly self-evident connection between space and time, and the meaning of phrases such as “being in place” and “being on time”. At the same time, the work also asks about the meaning of “being present” in a post-material age, wherein both time and place are redefined. As in all his works, Sherry employs humor to emphasize how the biopolitical regime typifying late capitalism cancels out the connection between control and body, and also acts in spaces of consciousness and modes of thinking.
The work at the Center for Digital Art in Holon will be performed by artist Daniel Yahel.
