Dalibor Martinis/1978 Talks to Dalibor Martinis/2010 (2010)

Lives and works in Zagreb

The expression “internal dialogue” receives new meaning in the work of Croatian artist Dalibor Martinis. In 1978, when he was thirty-one, the artist recorded himself asking twenty-two questions in TV interview format. Thirty-two years later, in 2010, in front of a studio audience on a TV show on Croatia’s public television channel, Martinis answered the questions posed by his young self. A pioneer of video art in Eastern Europe, and one of the first to highlight the material dimension of this art form, Martinis uses the power of video to travel through time and confront both the younger and the older Dalibor Martinis. The work challenges deeply rooted time perceptions in terms of “self-development” and “lifespan”, and is almost prophetic with regard to the importance of self-documentation in today’s popular culture, and the central place occupied by mass media in structuring the subject. A few months ago, on 27 March 2013, Martinis recorded an additional series of questions intended for Dalibor Martinis in 2077. The entity designated to answer the questions is an emanation or meta-personality of Dalibor that answers to the name DM:2077
