The installation ‘Citizen’ (2017) by the Swedish artist Santiago Mostyn documents an action in which the artist rows a small boat out into the Mediterranean Sea from the Dilek peninsula in Turkey to Samos in Greece. The film, which is shown as a double screening, follows the journey from two perspectives. One side documents the artist departing Turkey and rowing away in the direction of Greece, and the other shows Mostyn, in real time, approaching and arriving on the Greek coastline. Mostly we see the sea, indifferent to the human history and tragedies within it and the artist in his boat, struggling with the vast and open space and refusing to surrender to it.
