In the video work “Care For the Chicks” two female figures stands in one of the battlefields in Israel, that turned into a memorial site. The women are expressing the tragic conflict: stay and help defend their home, or leave with the children, thus defying the collective command. One of the women, Frumke, refused to abandon her children, and left with them during the kids’ evacuation from the kibbutz. The other woman, Shoshana, chose to stay and fight, and not leave with her young daughter to a safer area. Through their personal stories, each woman represents the complexity of her choice. While Shoshana is an example for the individual who sacrifices themselves for the collective and the nation, Frumke pays a price for her refusal to be part of the group.
