Max & Gym Workshops

In April and May of 2018, a group of year 4-6 pupils arrived for Ira Shalit and Eili Levy creative workshop.

The series dealt in the creation of personal images, material and symbolic, employing different forms and techniques.

The initial meetings focused on encouraging introspection through the creation of works representing the individual "self" of each boy or girl, such as a logo, shirt, and model of an imaginary space inside a cardboard box.

Later meetings provided an opportunity to extend this perspective outward, into a communal arena where all children could participate in collaborating on a huge floor model of the neighborhood (where most of them reside). The focus here was on the route taken to walk from the school to the Center for Digital Art.

During the workshop, pupils experimented and learned through manual techniques and technological production methods while incorporating an array of materials.

Techniques includes:

  • Printing on various materials (shirts, paper, and wood), creating reliefs using laser-cut symbols.
  • Sculpting of body part with plaster.
  • Planning and cutting personal logos, prepared by the children themselves, using a laser.
  • Constructing an automated painting machine powered by a V3 electric motor.
  • Creating a model of an intimate space inside a regular shoebox. Working with cardboard, plasteline, wood, printed images, and painting.

Music Room

A creative course, comprised of ten classes, was held in the music room. Boys and girls, year 7-9 pupils from the Yachad School, attended lessons by Shaked Mochiach from "Beit System Ali". During meetings, the group experimented with a range of art practices, from creative writing, to singing and playing music, and also movement. Participants assimilated themes that encompass their lives, from their experiences in school, in their neighborhood, and at home, and they sought creative methods of expression. The boys and girls acquired new tools of attentiveness, musicality, rhythm, acting and performance abilities.

Shaked Mochiach is a dancer, choreographer and group instructor, as well as a member of a culture movement working to enact social change through art.
