Music is one the most ancient tools of expression and humans have played on virtually every possible material or form. Building musical instruments enables us to expand the world of sounds around us and enables almost everyone to play. Creating a musical instrument is actually creating a new tool of expression in the world. In the workshop the students will be exposed to this fascinating world and will build their own personal instrument.
The workshop is divided into two parts: the first is devoted to building a musical instrument, and the second to making a short video clip. There is a selection of costumes and props in Hall that the students can use.
The Workshop
Introduction to the various tools (saw, hammer, screwdriver, filing tools), operating them, and basic safety rules.
Basic understanding of the various musical instruments and the basic elements required to create sound (sound box, string, percussion, wind).
Each student will choose which type of instrument they would like to build.
Joint trial and error to discover which sounds can be produced from each instrument.
Group collaboration to create an experimental music composition with one student as the conductor.
Recording the composition in the recording studio at the Israeli Center for Digital Art, and playing it to the whole group.
