A video installation depicting five Romanian heavy metal bands that are digging a hole in the ground and then burying their amplifiers, all the whilst playing together. As they are being covered in soil, the sound of the amplifiers gradually changes, until it becomes an abstraction of compressed vibrations.
The event was initiated by the artist and took place near Bucharest in 2011. The project suggests a correlation between the history of heavy metal and that of the eastern bloc, at a pivotal moment between 1989 and 1991.
The work is inspired by two legendary rock concerts: Pink Floyd in Pompeii (1971), when the band performed over a 24 hour period without an audience; and Metallica in Moscow (1991) in which western values like freedom and individualism were crystallized in the form of “heavy metal.”
