Born in 1970, in Afula, Israel, Yochai Avrahami lives and works in Israel. Yochai Avrahami’s work takes the viewer’s point of view on the world and obligates one to take a position. In his work he tries to describe current chaotic situations. He does it by duplicating hand-made machines that he exhibits as sculptures in perverce surroundings, or as kinetic creatures that participate in his videos.
Recently, Avrahami has extended the term ’sculptures’ with ’rolling’ objects from their natural environments, duplicating and reviving them to be actors in his videos. These works touch an existential and political nerve through strategies from different kinds of disciplines: intelligence satellite photography, military robots, remote control technology, slapstick, documentation of performance and more. Objects using casual and minimal materials remark on contemporary perceptions of security, control and its undermining - in both existential and politic aspects.
Avrahami’s works are placed in the borderline between control and chaos and offer a healthy measure of humor and vitality. |
